TOLEDO CHEROKEE SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES WITH PITTSBURGH
(WIN ON SATURDAY IN OT)
Toledo OH – The Toledo Cherokee played host to the Pittsburgh Vengeance over the weekend and skated away with a weekend. Pittsburgh pick up the win on Friday by a score of 3-1. The Cherokee bounced back on Saturday and won by a score of 4-3 in OT.
On Friday Toledo led 1-0 after forty minutes of play but two power-play goals and an empty net goal helped the Vengeance get the win. Ben Hamilton (Toledo OH) scored for Toledo in the loss. Anthony Weinrich (Toledo OH) and EJ Gilbert (Dexter MI) assisted on Hamilton’s first goal of the year. Toledo was 0/3 on the power-play while the Vengeance went 2/8.
“Very undisciplined by our group on Friday, we were not playing that bad but when you take penalties you give your opponent the chance to take momentum and that’s what they did.” Said head coach Kenny Miller
Adrian Morales (Monroe MI) 23 saves on 25 shots in net for Toledo.
The Cherokee rebounded on Saturday after trailing 2-0 early in the second period Toledo rolled off three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead into the third period. Pittsburgh would score late in the third period to send the game to over-time. In OT the Cherokee were awarded a penalty shot and EJ Gilbert would score his second goal of the game to seal the victory for Toledo. Brock Grandbois (Tecumseh ON) and Nolan Stanley (Boise ID) also scored for the Cherokee. Ricky Kwapich (Toledo OH) had two assists, while Hamilton, Tristin Snyder (Oregon OH), Ethan Resetar (Northville MI) and Blake Mullins (Oregon OH) each had one assist.
“After being down early our guys fought back and found a way to take the lead, then we let one our skill guys give us a chance to win it on the penalty shot and he came thru for the team, that was a big win for us.” Added Miller
Roman Malkov (Moscow Russia) picked up his first win in goal for Toledo making 23 saves.
The Cherokee return home Friday at 7:00PM to take on the Wooster Oilers, before heading to Fraser MI on Saturday to play the Metro Jets. Face off at Metro is set for 7:30PM.
