CHEROKEE SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES
(PICK UP ONE WIN IN CINCINNATI)
Toledo OH: The Toledo Cherokee came away with a weekend split on the road against the Cincinnati Thunder this past weekend. The Cherokee picked up a win on the opening game of the two game set Saturday by a score of 5-3 before dropping Sunday afternoons game 3-1.
On Saturday Toledo trailed the Thunder 1-0 after the first period before scoring three goals in the second to take a 4-2 lead heading into the third. The Cherokee would add two more goals in the third to seal the victory by a score of 5-3. Giovanni Taormina (Monroe MI) scored twice for Toledo, Anthony Weinrich (Toledo OH) and Dustin Foran (Clinton Twp, MI) each added a goal and an assist. Ricky Kwapich (Toledo OH) also scored for Toledo. EJ Gilbert (Dexter MI), Nolan Stanley (Boise ID) and Nick Nappi (Plant City FL) each had two assists in the game. Ben Hamilton (Toledo OH) and Ethan Restar (Northville MI) also added an assist. Adrian Morales (Monroe MI) picked up the win in net for Toledo making 22 saves on 25 shots.
“We found a win to win, I didn’t think we played very well. As a group we have to stick to our game plan and make sure we execute it in order for us to be successful.” Said head coach Kenny Miller
The two teams wrapped up the weekend series on Sunday afternoon with the Thunder skating to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Cherokee. Gilbert scored the lone goal for Toledo. Tristin Snyder (Oregon OH) and Kwapich assisted on the goal. Jeremy Hamerquist (Woodland Park CO) took the loss for the Cherokee making 27 saves on 29 shots. Toledo fired 49 shots on the Cincinnati goaltender.
“Our worst outing of the year, we were not ready to play and it showed, we were outworked and we are a team that needs to outwork our opponent every night or we are not going to win and that’s what happened on Sunday.” Added Miller
The Cherokee return home Friday night to take on the Wooster Oilers at the Team Toledo Ice House face of is set for 7:00PM. Toledo will then travel to Wooster on Saturday for a 7:45PM contest.
