Cleveland holds on for 5-3 win against Toledo

The Toledo Cherokee tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks held on for a 5-3 victory.

Cleveland made the score 5-2 on a goal by Tyler Dalton at 6:12 in the third period, and Toledo got as close as 5-3 when David Bogart scored 16:33 into the third period.

The Jr. Lumberjacks were paced by Nick Balavich, who finished with one goal. Balavich scored 12:13 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cleveland. Jake Maier picked up the assist.

Cleveland forced the Cherokee\’s goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, launching 32 shots and forcing 27 saves. Clay Horvath made 14 stops and Aaron Callan made 13.

Cleveland also got points from Dalton, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Jared Johnson, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Cleveland included Stefan Horgas and Matt Wipper, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Cleveland were Avery Huibregtse, Mike Palasics, Tyler Stockwell, and Brendan Logan, who contributed one a piece.

Toledo stifled the Jr. Lumberjacks\’ power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The defensemen of the Cherokee were also effective in Cleveland\’s zone, and came away with two goals.

Toledo also got a goal from Xavier Sudlow as well. More assists for Toledo came via Zach Armstrong, who had two and Dominic Pisanti, Tyler Zalecki, Brody Duncan, and Hudson Sabin, who each chipped in one.

Joseph Moza recorded 25 saves for the Jr. Lumberjacks. Cleveland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors. Toledo incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
