Toledo beats Southern Tier 3-2 after comeback scare

The Southern Tier Xpress tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Toledo Cherokee would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

Toledo took a 3-0 lead during the second period, only to have Southern Tier storm back on a Luke Sunde goal 15:16 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Cherokee\’s offense rang up 36 shots on the Xpress\’ net.

Toledo was helped by Mark McGee, who grabbed one goal. McGee scored on the power play 8:35 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Toledo. The Cherokee had taken the advantage when Southern Tier\’s Zach Hand got sent off for boarding. Tyler Zalecki picked up the assist. Toledo also had goals scored by Zach Swanson and Austin Turner, who scored one goal each. More assists for Toledo came via Evan Heldt, Dominic Pisanti, Tristin Snyder, Kyler Omey, and Cody Estrel, who contributed one each.

The Xpress forced Toledo goalie Glen Bates to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

Southern Tier was helped by Cody Maulsby, who finished with one goal. Maulsby scored on the power play 1:57 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Toledo. Brandon Desrosiers assisted on the tally. Southern Tier additionally got points from Sunde, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Southern Tier received assists from Isaiah Crawford, who had one.

Glen Bates made 29 saves for the Cherokee on 31 shots. Toledo incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Xpress\’ Brendan Shuck stopped 33 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Southern Tier incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
